first_img Related The PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon has confirmed that Michellie Jones, a legend in the sport of triathlon, will serve as the honorary host of the race weekend that includes the PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon full and half iron distance events and the New Hanover Regional Medical Center 5K.Jones is a Kona Ironman world champion (2006), ITU World Champion (1998, 1999), XTERRA Triathlon World Champion (1996) and Olympic Silver Medalist (2000). The Australian triathlete has more than 175 wins to her credit across all race distances, both on- and off-road.On Friday 24 October, Jones will be on hand at the PPD Beach2Battleship race expo at the Wilmington Convention Center to sign autographs and meet athletes, friends and visitors. Later, she will welcome athletes at the kick-off dinner.On race day, Saturday 25 October, athletes, fans and spectators can look for Jones in the finish line area on Water Street, where the PPD Beach2Battleship and NHRMC 5K athletes will take their final triumphant steps.Finally, she will address the audience at the athlete celebration brunch and awards ceremony, on Sunday 26 October at 10:00 in the Wilmington Convention Center. The event welcomes more than 2,000 athletes and their families to the mid-Atlantic destinations of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Recognized as one of the top five triathlons in the world by readers of Triathlete magazine, the 2014 event will take place Saturday 25 October.The full long distance race includes a 2.4-mile swim in Banks Channel along Wrightsville Beach, a 112-mile bike through New Hanover, Pender, Sampson and Bladen counties, and a full marathon of 26.2 miles that finishes in downtown Wilmington.The middle distance course is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run that also begins at Wrightsville Beach and ends in downtown Wilmington.More than 2,000 athletes, including 19 international competitors and triathletes from 42 US states participated in the 2013 race, helping generate more than US$4 million in local economic impact.
